How to take a photo?

To get perfect shots for any type of document, use the following guidelines.

Woman standing in profile half a metre from a light wall

Distance

Stand about 50 cm away from the wall. This will help avoid harsh shadows behind your back and keep the details in the photo clear.

Right and wrong: head held straight and head tilted

Face position

Put your face in front of the camera lens. Hold the camera at eye level. Maintain a neutral facial expression. This will help create optimal conditions for obtaining a high-quality image.

Right and wrong: even light background and background with a side shadow

Background and lighting

Choose a light or solid color background for the best image quality. Stand facing a light source, such as an open window. The background will be automatically cut out.

You already have a good photo and need it in passport size. Converting it means more than resizing. The photo has to be cropped so your head is the right size and in the right place, then saved at the right dimensions. If you just stretch or shrink the image, the proportions come out wrong and the photo gets rejected.

Common passport photo conversions

TargetUsed forKey numbers
2×2 in (51×51 mm)US passport, printedHead 1 to 1 3/8 in (25–35 mm), chin to top of head
600×600 pxUS Diversity Visa digital entryJPEG, square, 240 kB or less
35×45 mmUK passport (printed), Schengen visas, many other countriesUK: head 29–34 mm, chin to crown
600×750 px or largerUK online passport applicationAt least 600 px wide and 750 px tall, 50 KB–10 MB

A 2×2 in square scanned at 300 pixels per inch comes out to 600×600 px. That's how the State Department describes scanning an existing photo for the Diversity Visa entry. Tools: 2×2 in, 600×600 px, 35×45 mm.

Which photos can be converted?

Converting changes the frame, not the photo. So the original must already meet the rules:

  • Taken recently. A US passport photo must be from the last 6 months.
  • Facing the camera directly, with eyes open and a neutral expression.
  • Plain white or off-white background with no shadows, if it's for a US passport.
  • No glasses, no filters, no beauty mode.
  • Enough space around your head and shoulders. If the original is cropped tight at the forehead or chin, it can't be converted.
  • Sharp and in color. A photo of an old print or a low-resolution screenshot usually isn't good enough.

An old vacation photo or a cropped group shot won't work, no matter how carefully it's resized. In those cases, take a new one. Our guide explains how: take a passport photo at home.

Converting is not editing

The US State Department says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters." It checks photos for digital changes. Cropping the original to the required frame is a different thing, and the online renewal application itself lets you reposition or crop your photo. Smoothing skin, swapping the background, or regenerating the face is not allowed. For a US passport, our tool does automated cropping to 2×2 in plus a background and compliance check. We don't change your face.

How to convert a photo to passport size

  1. Open the passport photo maker and choose your document (for example, the US passport photo).
  2. Upload the original file, ideally straight from the camera. Don't use a version that was sent through a messenger app, because those are compressed.
  3. The tool finds your face, sets the head size and position for that document, and crops to the required proportions and pixel size.
  4. It also checks the background, lighting, glasses, and pose, and tells you if the original can't be used.
  5. Preview the result before you pay. Download the digital file for $7, or the file with a print-ready 4×6 in layout for $10.

If the result doesn't work, you get one free re-upload within 30 days. Automated plans have no acceptance guarantee. Manual processing ($10) includes a specialist review and an acceptance guarantee.

Why not just resize in a photo editor?

You can, but resizing only changes pixel counts. A passport photo also needs:

  • the right head-to-frame ratio, which is the most common sizing error;
  • the head centered horizontally, with the right amount of space above it;
  • the correct aspect ratio: square for 2×2 in, tall for 35×45 mm;
  • enough resolution to print sharply with no visible pixels.

Getting all four right by hand takes measuring and some trial and error. Our tool does it automatically for each document. Want to see whether your photo is usable first? Run the free passport photo checker at /en/free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a photo to 2×2 inches?

Upload the original photo to our tool and choose the US passport or 2×2 in format. It crops the photo so your head is 1 to 1 3/8 in tall within a 2×2 in square, then gives you a digital file and, if you want it, a print-ready 4×6 in layout.

How many pixels is a 2×2 passport photo?

At 300 pixels per inch, 2×2 in is 600×600 px. The State Department's Diversity Visa entry asks for exactly 600×600 px. For US online passport renewal, the upload page lists file formats and size (54 KB–10 MB) but no pixel dimensions.

Can I convert a 35×45 mm photo into a 2×2 photo?

Only if the original image has enough space around your head and shoulders. A printed 35×45 mm photo is cropped too tightly for a square format. Use the original digital file or take a new photo.

Can I convert an old photo for my passport?

For a US passport, the photo must have been taken in the last 6 months, so an older photo won't qualify however well it's converted. Other countries set their own time limits.

Will converting reduce the quality?

Not if the original is sharp. Problems come from low-resolution sources such as screenshots, messenger-compressed images, or photos of prints. Upload the original camera file.
