To get perfect shots for any type of document, use the following guidelines.

Stand about 50 cm away from the wall. This will help avoid harsh shadows behind your back and keep the details in the photo clear.

Put your face in front of the camera lens. Hold the camera at eye level. Maintain a neutral facial expression. This will help create optimal conditions for obtaining a high-quality image.

Choose a light or solid color background for the best image quality. Stand facing a light source, such as an open window. The background will be automatically cut out.

To renew a US passport online you upload a digital passport photo instead of mailing a printed one. You can take it at home with a phone, but it still has to meet the same rules as a printed passport photo. This page explains what the State Department asks for, who can renew online, and how our tool helps: automated cropping to the right frame, plus a background and compliance check. We don't change your face.
According to travel.state.gov, you can use online renewal only if all of these are true:
The only official online renewal site is opr.travel.state.gov. Your old passport is cancelled once you submit, so don't apply right before a trip. If you don't qualify, you'll renew by mail or in person, and then you need a printed 2×2 in photo. See passport photo printing.
| Requirement | What travel.state.gov says |
|---|---|
| File format | JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or HEIF |
| File size | Between 54 KB and 10 MB |
| Color and age | Color photo taken in the last 6 months |
| Framing | Head and shoulders centered; the bottom of the frame at the edge of your shoulders |
| Background | Plain white or off-white, no shadows, texture, lines, or objects |
| Source | An original digital photo, not a photo of a print or a scan |
| Edits | No filters or retouching |
The upload page doesn't list required pixel dimensions or an aspect ratio. The application lets you reposition or crop the photo, and the official tool checks basic requirements when you upload. An employee reviews the photo later and may ask for a new one by letter or email. A sharp, square image at least 600×600 px (see 600×600 px photo) is a safe starting point, but go by what the upload tool accepts.
The State Department's wording is direct: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters." It also says it checks all photos to make sure they weren't digitally enhanced or altered. Photos with a replaced background or a smoothed face get rejected, even if they look fine.
So our tool doesn't retouch, beautify, or regenerate your face. For a US passport it does three things:
Our step-by-step guide covers more: how to take a passport photo at home.
Automated plans come with no acceptance guarantee. If the photo doesn't work out, you get one free re-upload within 30 days. If you want a person to look at it, the Manual processing plan ($10) includes a specialist review and an acceptance guarantee.
Not sure your photo is good enough? Run it through our free passport photo checker at /en/free first, and read the common passport photo rejection reasons.
You can take one yourself or have a friend take it. The State Department allows photos taken by a friend or family member. Then upload the original to our tool to crop it and check it for $7. Many pharmacies and photo studios also offer a digital copy with a printed passport photo.
It's better not to. Selfies are taken too close, which distorts the face and makes the head the wrong size. Have someone else take the photo from a few feet away, against a white wall.
The online renewal page doesn't specify pixel dimensions. It lists the file format (JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF) and the file size (54 KB to 10 MB). A sharp square image of at least 600×600 px is a safe choice, and the upload tool tells you if something is wrong.
No. The State Department rejects photos changed with software, apps, or filters, including background replacement and face smoothing. Cropping your original photo to the right frame is fine, and the application itself lets you reposition or crop.
The State Department will contact you by letter or email and ask for a new photo. If you made your photo with us, you can re-upload a new shot for free within 30 days.
