How to take a photo?

To get perfect shots for any type of document, use the following guidelines.

Woman standing in profile half a metre from a light wall

Distance

Stand about 50 cm away from the wall. This will help avoid harsh shadows behind your back and keep the details in the photo clear.

Right and wrong: head held straight and head tilted

Face position

Put your face in front of the camera lens. Hold the camera at eye level. Maintain a neutral facial expression. This will help create optimal conditions for obtaining a high-quality image.

Right and wrong: even light background and background with a side shadow

Background and lighting

Choose a light or solid color background for the best image quality. Stand facing a light source, such as an open window. The background will be automatically cut out.

Before you upload a photo to a passport or visa application, it's worth running it through a passport photo checker. Our free check at /en/free looks at your photo and points out the problems that most often get passport photos rejected. You don't need to pay or sign up.

A photo check is not an official decision. Only the government agency handling your application, such as the US Department of State, decides whether a photo is accepted. A checker reduces the risk of rejection. It can't remove it.

What our passport photo checker looks at

CheckWhat it means
Face detection and poseOne face, looking straight at the camera, head not tilted or turned
Head size and positionWhether the head can be framed to the required size, such as 1 to 1 3/8 in (25–35 mm) chin to top of head on a US 2×2 in photo
BackgroundPlain and light, with no visible objects, patterns, or strong shadows
LightingEven light on the face, not too dark or washed out
Eyes and glassesBoth eyes open and visible, no glasses (glasses aren't allowed in US passport photos)
Image qualitySharp enough, not blurry, grainy, or pixelated

What a checker can't verify

  • When the photo was taken. A US passport photo must be from the last 6 months. Software can't tell when a photo was taken.
  • Whether the photo was edited. The State Department says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters." It checks photos for digital changes. If you used a beauty filter or replaced the background, a checker may not notice, but the State Department can still reject the photo.
  • Medical or religious exceptions, such as a head covering or glasses, which need a signed statement.
  • Country-specific extras, such as Canada's rule that passport photos must be taken by a commercial photographer.

How to use the free check

  1. Take a photo against a plain white or off-white wall, in even light, with someone else holding the phone a few feet away. Our guide explains how: take a passport photo at home.
  2. Go to /en/free and upload the original file. Don't upload a screenshot or a photo that was sent through a messenger app.
  3. Read the results. Each flagged item tells you what to fix: retake with better light, move away from the wall to remove shadows, take off your glasses, and so on.
  4. When the check looks clean, make your final photo.

Fix problems by retaking, not editing

For US passport photos, edits make things worse. The State Department rejects photos with a digitally replaced background, a retouched outline, or filters. Its own guidance for a non-white background is to fix your lighting and background and take a new photo. The same applies to red-eye: don't edit it, retake the photo. Our list of passport photo rejection reasons covers the most common mistakes. If the problem is the background, see passport photo background.

From checked photo to finished passport photo

Once your photo passes, upload it to the passport photo maker:

  • For a US passport, we crop your original photo to 2×2 in and check the background and compliance. We don't change your face. See the US passport photo page.
  • You see the result before you pay.
  • Digital photo: $7. With a print-ready 4×6 in layout: $10.
  • One free re-upload within 30 days if your shot doesn't work out.

Automated plans have no acceptance guarantee. If you'd like a person to check your photo, choose Manual processing ($10). A specialist reviews it, and the plan includes an acceptance guarantee. This is the only plan with a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is the passport photo check really free?

Yes. The check at /en/free costs nothing and doesn't need an account. You pay only if you decide to download a finished photo, and you see that photo before paying.

If my photo passes your checker, will the passport office accept it?

Not necessarily. Our check is not an official decision. Only the government agency decides. The check catches common technical problems. It can't confirm when the photo was taken or detect every kind of editing. Only the Manual processing plan ($10) comes with an acceptance guarantee.

Can I upload a photo for a passport from my phone?

Yes. The checker and the photo maker work in a phone browser. Upload the original camera file, not a screenshot or a photo forwarded through a messenger app, which lowers quality.

Does the State Department's online renewal check my photo?

Yes. The online renewal tool checks whether your photo meets basic requirements when you upload it. An employee reviews it later and may ask for a new photo.

My photo failed the check. Can you fix it?

For a US passport, the fix is usually a new photo, because the State Department rejects digitally altered photos. The check tells you what to change: light, background, distance, glasses, or pose.
