Stand about 50 cm away from the wall. This will help avoid harsh shadows behind your back and keep the details in the photo clear.

Put your face in front of the camera lens. Hold the camera at eye level. Maintain a neutral facial expression. This will help create optimal conditions for obtaining a high-quality image.

Choose a light or solid color background for the best image quality. Stand facing a light source, such as an open window. The background will be automatically cut out.

The background is one of the most common reasons passport photos get rejected. The easy answer, "just make the background white in an app," doesn't work for a US passport. Here's what the rules actually say and how to get a background that passes.
The US State Department requires a background that is "white or off-white, free of shadows, and plain without texture, objects, or lines." It also says: "Do not change your photo using computer software, phone apps or filters," and it checks all photos for digital changes.
That includes the background. The State Department's own examples mark these as unacceptable:
Its advice for a non-white background is to fix the lighting and background and take a new photo. So for a US passport, don't change the background. Shoot against a white or off-white wall. For a US photo, our tool crops your original to 2×2 in and checks the background and compliance. We don't change your face, and we tell you if the background won't pass.
A slightly grey or cream-looking wall is often fine for "off-white," as long as it's plain, even, and shadow-free. A blue, colored, textured, or patterned wall is not. The full walkthrough is in how to take a passport photo at home.
| Document | Background in the official rules |
|---|---|
| US passport | White or off-white, plain, no shadows |
| UK passport, printed | Plain cream or light grey |
| UK passport, digital | Plain light-colored |
| Canada passport | Plain white or light-colored |
| India passport (embassy ICAO guidance) | White |
| Schengen and other visas | Check the consulate's instructions |
The US, UK, Canada, and Indian missions all say passport photos must not be altered by software. Canada specifically names photo-editing software, filters, and AI tools.
For a US passport or visa, no. Treat a digitally replaced background as grounds for rejection. For some visas and ID cards from other countries, background replacement may be acceptable, but many authorities forbid any digital alteration. Check your document's official rules before you rely on a changed background, and don't assume it will be accepted. When in doubt, retake the photo against a light wall. That works for every document.
Our free passport photo checker at /en/free flags non-plain backgrounds, visible objects, and shadows behind the head, so you can retake the photo before you apply. Then make the final photo in the passport photo maker:

White or off-white, plain, with no shadows, texture, objects, or lines. Light blue, grey patterns, or a colored wall aren't accepted.
Not for a US passport. The State Department says not to change your photo using software, phone apps, or filters, and it shows a digitally replaced background as unacceptable. Retake the photo against a white wall or a white sheet.
For a US passport, off-white is allowed if it's plain and evenly lit with no shadows. UK printed passport photos actually call for a plain cream or light grey background.
Step a few feet away from the wall and light your face from the front, for example by facing a window. Don't use a direct flash close to the wall.
It depends on the country and document. US visa photos must not be digitally altered to change your appearance in any way. Some other authorities may accept a cleaned-up background, but many don't. Check the official rules for your document before relying on it.
