DV Lottery Photo Guide — Diversity Visa 2027

The Diversity Visa Lottery (DV-2027) entry period runs from early October to early November 2026. Each entry requires a square color photo of every applicant — principal, spouse, and unmarried children under 21 — that meets exact U.S. State Department specifications. Photo errors are the #1 reason entries are disqualified. This guide covers the full 2027 cycle photo rules and how to avoid the most common rejections.

The 240 KB File-Size Trap

The DV Lottery's most rejected photos are not for biometric reasons — they're for file size. The State Department's photo upload tool refuses any file over 240 KB. A standard iPhone photo is 2–4 MB; a digital camera photo is 5–10 MB. Without compression, these all fail upload.

The challenge: compress to under 240 KB while keeping the photo sharp enough to pass the head-height and eye-line checks. Reducing JPEG quality below 70% causes visible blockiness; reducing dimensions below 600×600 fails the resolution check.

Photo-Visa.Online's DV Lottery Photo service compresses to ~200 KB while keeping the photo at 600×600 px and visually sharp — the State Department's photo validator accepts it on first upload.

Required Photos per Entry

The DV Lottery requires a separate photo for each person on the entry, including:

  • Principal applicant (the lottery winner)
  • Spouse, even if not immigrating
  • Every unmarried child under 21, including step-children and adopted children

You cannot share photos. Each photo must be unique and current. Failure to include a required dependent's photo disqualifies the entire entry — and you can submit only one entry per year, so a single missing photo wastes the annual chance.

Top 10 Reasons DV Lottery Photos Are Rejected

  1. File over 240 KB — most common, especially for high-resolution iPhone photos
  2. Not square — phone cameras default to 4:3 aspect ratio; must be cropped to 1:1
  3. Resolution under 600 × 600 px — old phones or over-compressed images
  4. Background not white — slight blue, gray, or yellow tint causes rejection
  5. Glasses on — banned for all DV photos
  6. Head too small in frame — must be 50–69% of frame height
  7. Photo over 6 months old — must be taken in the same year as the entry
  8. Visible objects in background — picture frames, light switches, doorframes
  9. Smile too wide — neutral expression required, no visible teeth
  10. Color cast — indoor lighting tints, screen-light blue tint

How to Take a DV Lottery Photo at Home

  1. Stand against a plain white wall in indirect daylight. Avoid bathrooms (yellow tile) and any wall with patterns.
  2. Take a selfie with the rear camera at eye level, 4–5 ft away, neutral expression, no glasses.
  3. Take 5–10 shots, pick the sharpest with eyes open and mouth closed.
  4. Upload to Photo-Visa.Online — select DV Lottery Photo.
  5. The AI:
    • Crops to exactly 600×600 px (square)
    • Replaces the background with State-Department white
    • Compresses under 240 KB without visible quality loss
    • Validates head height, eye line, expression, and color cast
    • Refuses upload if compliance fails — you don't pay until validated
  6. Download the JPEG and upload directly to dvprogram.state.gov during the entry period.

Photos for Family Members

Each family member needs their own photo. For minor children, see our baby passport photo guide — the same techniques work for the DV Lottery (the rules are identical to U.S. passport photos).

Photo-Visa.Online supports multiple uploads in one session. Process the full family in 10 minutes total.

The DV Lottery Entry Process

  1. October–November 2026: entry period for DV-2027 opens at dvprogram.state.gov
  2. Free entry — never pay anyone to "submit" your DV entry. Beware fraudulent services charging $50–$200 for what is a free government form.
  3. One entry per person per year — duplicates disqualify both
  4. Confirmation number — save the unique 16-character code; you cannot retrieve it later
  5. May 2027: results posted at dvlottery.state.gov — check using your confirmation number
  6. If selected: proceed with DS-260 immigrant visa application; new photo required at that stage too

What Photo-Visa.Online Doesn't Do

To be clear: we don't submit your DV Lottery entry. We only deliver the compliant photo file. Submission is free at dvprogram.state.gov — anyone charging you to submit the entry is running a scam.

Bottom Line

DV-2027 photos must be 600×600 px JPEG, under 240 KB, square, white background, head sized 50–69% of frame, taken within 6 months. The 240 KB compression rule is the trickiest part — Photo-Visa.Online handles it automatically for $3 per photo. For a family of 4: $12 total, vs $60+ at CVS for four separate sittings.
